Media Fellowship completion

The members of the Biodetection Technologies Hub have not only been working hard on research, but some have also been stepping into the world of science communication through a media fellowship.

Each year, the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) runs a scheme to provide opportunities for scientists, engineers, and clinicians to work with media outlets. The two to six weeks placement aims to bridge the gap between journalism and science and give scientists confidence in sharing their work with the public.

Dr Francis Hassard from Cranfield University was placed with BBC Futures, where he translated his expertise in microbiology and water science into a fascinating article exploring the hidden dangers of bacteria and fungi inhabiting shower heads and pipes. His piece can be found here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/future/author/francis-hassard.

Meanwhile, Dr Etelka Chung from the University of Hertfordshire was hosted by IFL Science, where she wrote articles on various topics, including technology, animals and the environment. Her research on aerosol science inspired a feature article that included an interview with Hub Director Professor Ian Johnston. Discover her articles here: https://www.iflscience.com/etelka-chung

This programme has equipped the fellows with journalism skills and extended their dissemination abilities. The Biodetection Technologies Hub plans to launch a series of outreach activities in the coming year to communicate its research and support members in undergoing the media fellowship with ABSW.
