University of Hertfordshire

Tanojit Paul is a PhD student at the University of Hertfordshire, part of the 6th cohort in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science. He holds a BSc in Earth Science and an MSc in Geology from the Manipal Institute of Technology. Prior to his PhD, Tanojit worked as a project associate at the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, where he investigated the relationship between rock properties and ultrasonic wave velocities. He also worked at the Indian Statistical Institute, focusing on atmospheric particulate matter, its carbon composition, and the study of black carbon and persistent organic pollutants in Arctic soils and sediments.

What are you working on within the Hub?

My PhD project focuses on developing a novel approach for airborne environmental DNA (airDNA) collection, using high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) as a model. I’m combining electrostatic precipitation (ESP) and digital microfluidics (DMF) technologies to capture, concentrate, and purify airborne genetic material. This method could make pathogen detection more efficient and offer applications in fields such as defence, health, and agriculture, by enhancing our ability to study airborne disease transmission and pathogen risks.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of my research, I enjoy playing pool and cards, as they’re great ways to relax and unwind. I’m also a fan of watching movies and exploring secluded villages, which allows me to experience new places and cultures in a more intimate way. Traveling is another passion of mine, as it gives me the opportunity to discover different parts of the world and broaden my horizons.
