Hasandara Parami Sudangama is a PhD student at the Cranfield Defence and Security at Shrivenham Campus. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. She received her Master of Research degree (MRes) from Nottingham Trent University with a thesis in organic chemistry, involving design and modification of peptides towards potential antimicrobial activity.
What are you working on within the Hub?
My PhD focuses on developing a bioaerosol detection system using a colorimetric technology. My research involves the design and manufacturing of an advanced colorimetric sensor which monitors chromic dyes changing colour when in contact with airborne biological particles. The Hub offers me important tools to develop my project as this is highly multidisciplinary, spanning analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and materials science.
What is the impact of your research so far?
My background in organic chemistry gives me the opportunity to study chemical reactions and biomolecular interactions to enhance their sensitivity and selectivity using colorimetric techniques. This research supports a wide range of applications ranging from rapid bioaerosols detection and environmental monitoring to public health surveillance, and industrial air quality assessment.
What has been the highlight of your research career to date?
During my MRes, I’ve worked on an organic chemistry project to design and modify peptides with the potential to have antimicrobial properties. This work gave me the opportunity to explore creative molecular design and synthetic techniques aimed at addressing challenges in drug discovery. The highlight of this particular PhD project has been contributing to a truly multidisciplinary team, combining chemistry, biology, and engineering to develop portable colorimetric platforms for rapid bioaerosol detection.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes, playing the piano and singing, watching science fiction movies, and playing chess. Also, I’m passionate about traveling and discovering new cultures.
